Officially knows as the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, The Bahamas is an independent country which boasts two thousand cays and seven hundred islands that form an archipelago. An English-speaking country, The Bahamas archipelago is located southeast of the United States in the Atlantic Ocean; northeast to east of Cuba, Hispaniola (Dominican Republic & Haiti) and north to east of the Caribbean Sea; and west to northwest of the Turks
and Caicos Islands. The Bahamas is almost 14,000 km with an estimated population of 330,000. The capital of The Bahamas is Nassau.
The history of The Bahamas can be traced back to Christopher Columbus and his first voyage in 1492. In 1647, the first recorded permanent European settlement in The Bahamas was on the island of Eleuthera. During the 18th century, slave trade brought many Africans to the Bahamas and currently, their decendants make up 85 per cent of the Bahamian population. It was on July 10, 1973 that The Bahamas gained Independence from the United Kingdom to become the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
